One of the questions I get asked most often is, “How do I get the absolute fastest charge possible?” It’s a great question. When you’re generating your own power, every turn of the handle counts, and you want to know your effort is being put to the best possible use. The truth is, charging speed is a partnership between your effort, our generator, and the device you’re charging. It’s not just about cranking faster. Over years of designing and testing these machines, I’ve learned that performance comes from understanding the whole system. Let’s dive into the four key drivers that determine your real-world charging speed.
The 4 Drivers of Charging Speed

											1. Your Device is the Boss: Built-in Charging Limits
One of the first things I learned when testing early prototypes was that you can’t force-feed a battery. Every single battery-powered device, from your phone to a laptop, has a dedicated computer chip inside that acts as a strict gatekeeper, managing the flow of incoming energy.
Its primary job is safety and preserving the long-term health of the battery. It knows the battery’s size, chemistry, and temperature, and it will never accept more power than it’s designed for. This is why a small smartphone, for example, can’t even accept half the peak power the Powerhouse is capable of delivering. It’s like trying to fill a small glass from a firehose—the glass will only take what it can hold. Generally, devices with larger batteries (like tablets and power stations) are built to accept power at a much faster rate.
We intentionally engineer our generators to have enough power headroom to satisfy even the most power-hungry devices on the market. The goal isn’t to force your phone to charge faster than it’s able, but to ensure that when you plug in a big tablet or power pack, our generator is ready and able to deliver the full, rapid charge it’s asking for.
The takeaway: Don’t be surprised if your small phone doesn’t max out the generator; it’s a sign the system is working perfectly. Your device is simply taking exactly what it safely needs.

											2. The Digital Handshake: Why Your Cable & Port Matter
It’s easy to think of a cable as just a wire, but in modern electronics, it’s more like a high-speed data link for energy. The specific port and cable you use determine how “intelligently” your device and the generator can communicate.
The modern USB-C port is the clear winner here, and it’s why we built the Powercell around this advanced standard. When you use a USB-C cable, the generator and your device perform a “digital handshake.” They talk to each other to negotiate the optimal voltage for the fastest possible charge. It’s a smart, flexible system.
The older, rectangular USB-A port is more of a one-way street. It’s reliable, but it doesn’t have that smart negotiation capability, which limits its power output. For context, the USB-C port on the Powerhouse is about three times more powerful than its USB-A port.
Of course, we all still have plenty of older USB-A cables. You can absolutely use them with the Powercell’s USB-C port by using a simple USB-C to USB-A adapter. This provides great backward compatibility, but just know that it limits the connection to the slower, less powerful USB-A charging speeds.
The takeaway: For maximum power and efficiency, always use a direct, high-quality USB-C to USB-C connection whenever you can. It’s the most powerful and efficient path for your energy.

											3. The 80% Rule: Why Batteries Sip When They’re Full
Have you ever noticed that after a few minutes of hard cranking, the resistance suddenly gets easier? That’s not you getting stronger (though you are!); it’s your device’s battery telling the generator it’s getting full.
To protect the long-term health of lithium-ion batteries, charging software is designed to be aggressive on an empty battery and gentle on a full one. You will always see the fastest charging speeds when your device is below 50%. As the battery fills, especially past the 80% mark, the device’s internal controls intentionally slow the flow of power to a trickle. This “topping off” phase prevents stress and excess heat, which can degrade the battery over time.
Consider it like docking a spacecraft. The long journey across open space is done at incredible speed. But the final approach to the space station—that last crucial phase—is a slow, delicate, and precise maneuver to ensure a perfect seal and prevent catastrophic damage. This is a perfect example of the “partnership” in action. Our generator is always ready to deliver, but it respects the commands sent by your device to protect your gear.
The takeaway: If you need a quick burst of power in an emergency, the most effective time to charge is when your battery is low.

											4. You Are the Engine: Matching Your Effort to the Task
At the end of the day, our generators are incredibly efficient energy conversion tools, but the raw ingredient is you. The power your device draws from the generator translates directly into the physical cranking resistance you feel. Charging a phone at 10 watts feels one way; charging a tablet that’s demanding 30 watts feels significantly harder.
This physical reality is at the very core of our two-product philosophy.
We engineered the Powercell for “finesse over brute force.” Its ultralight carbon fiber arm, big grip, and precision bearings are all optimized to make it easy to sustain the smooth, steady cadence needed for fast-charging phones and small devices. It’s the perfect tool for converting consistent, moderate effort into usable power with maximum efficiency and minimal fatigue.
The classic Powerhouse is our unapologetic workhorse. Its all-metal, rock-solid build is designed to give you the leverage and stability needed to handle the high-torque, high-effort cranking required to make a real dent in a larger tablet or power station battery. When a device demands maximum power, the Powerhouse is ready for the heavy lifting.
The takeaway: Match the generator to your goal. The ultralight Powercell is your portable backup, perfect for delivering a critical power boost on the move and on demand. The rugged Powerhouse is your base camp workhorse, built for banking large chunks of energy into bigger devices and backup batteries.
